CleanupUK

Supporting volunteer litter picking groups

More than two million pieces of litter are dropped in the UK every day, costing taxpayers over £1 billion a year in street cleaning. Litter harms wildlife, pollutes rivers, and degrades public areas, leading people to avoid their local green spaces and miss out on the physical and mental health benefits of spending time outside. A vicious circle begins where the more an area is littered, the more litter it attracts.

CleanupUK is a nationwide charity which supports communities to come together to tackle the litter problem in their neighbourhood and strengthen their community. The charity has created over ninety Cleanup hubs in the most littered communities, supporting local volunteers to form litter picking groups, or to grow and sustain existing groups by providing information, advice and practical help and equipment. These hubs have involved over 4,000 people litter picking in deprived areas. The CleanupUK website also hosts over 580 litter picking groups around the UK who can connect with each other to share ideas and celebrate their achievements.
